The Rubicon Group, had an urgent need to rapidly develop and productize new software modules for its growing customer base. There was a backlog of 100 modules, and in-house capacity had been reached. There was some internal thinking on offshore outsourcing.
IDeaS was selected as the supplier to provide a Pricing Solution for a large UK public company in the Transport & Travel sector. This was to be a pilot program in an unexplored area where Pricing had never been previously applied. While, this was a big opportunity for IDeaS, it presented significant management and technical challenges.
IDeaS Inc. wanted to solidify its position as the leading provider of revenue management software products to the global hospitality market, while controlling the costs. Establishing a subsidiary operation in India to augment the work done in the US, was a possible solution.
The 9/11 disaster created a major decline in the hospitality market, and vendors like IDeaS Inc. were hit very hard. There was an urgency to recover lost ground, by building a less expensive web-based product. Design and architecture in the US, followed by offshoring to India was also a key to success.
There was an urgent need to integrate the IDeaS enterprise product with third party products in order to expand the market. There was no remaining capacity in-house. Offshore outsourcing to India appeared to be the only way out.
