Rubicon Group retrofits offshore outsourcing to India, with US operations

Proposed Solution to meet Business Challenges

When we were brought in as a consultant, we conducted a Discovery Phase. The client agreed on the feasibility of offshore outsourcing to India for enhancing software production, and decided to go the whole way. We proposed a Crawl-Walk-Run approach for an integrated in-house offshore operation, starting with a Fixed Price pilot and progressing to a dedicated offshore team (ODC). We proposed that after initial success, the offshore team should expand to handle product support, data analysis, documentation and other functions, while the in-house team should focus on project coordination and adding value to the product suite.

Implementation Steps Followed

We led The Rubicon Group through our offshore outsourcing methodology:

  1. Definition of Preparatory work and transformations in the product, internal processes and people roles to facilitate offshoring. The hidden costs of offshoring were also quantified.
  2. Design and Implementation of an RFP specifying the roles and responsibilities of each side in an integrated in-house offshore operation. The Crawl, Walk, Run steps were defined.
  3. There were 11 bidders from India. We evaluated the proposals and shortlisted 5.
  4. We accompanied our client to visit India to select a partner from the shortlisted companies.
  5. We trained our client on "Building a Winning Team with your Offshore Partner".

The above steps including completion of client side preparations were executed in 9 weeks. This was followed by an execution of the Crawl and Walk stages.

10 months into the operations, an integrated in-house, offshore team, working on development and maintenance of new and existing products has been established. The Crawl and Walk stages have been successfully completed, leading to the Run Stage. The Rubicon Group has mastered the science and art of managing an offshore team.
